Le edizioni di Windows passeranno dalle sei di Windows 7 (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise e Ultimate) alle tre di Windows 8.
Ci sarà Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro e Windows RT: Windows RT è destinato ai computer con processore ARM, a basso consumo.
La versione ARM di Windows 8 avrà però un'edizione dedicata di Microsoft Office con Word, Excel, PowerPoint e OneNote.
Windows RT non permetterà l'installazione di software a 32 e a 64 Bit, mentre le app Metro saranno universali e funzioneranno su tutte le edizioni di Windows 8. Non avrà Media Player e, come Windows 8, non avrà le funzioni avanzate dedicate esclusivamente agli utenti di Windows 8 Pro.
